Another successful scenic art workshop with the Barbican…

What another fantastic day in the design realisation workshops! Our Head of Design Realisation and scenic art lecturer Vanessa Cass ran another successful workshop in partnership with the Barbican Centre running alongside their current exhibition in the Curve Gallery showcasing scenic cloths (two of which were created in our very own workshops!). The day was broken down into two sessions demonstrating how to recreate part of one of the cloths, an old tiled wall painted by one of our recently graduated students Nancy and Vanessa. Here’s an example piece that Vanessa created…

Everyone who took part in the workshops took their piece home and I must say some of the work created was fantastic! We had such a mixture of people from students all the way from Cardiff on a theatre design course, to mums and daughters getting stuck into learning all about one of the scenic processes we use here at the Guildhall School. It was so lovely meeting new people and showing off our fantastic facilities…

Overall the participants learnt about stencilling, pounces, trompe l’oeil (trick of the eye with highlights and shadows), blocking and breaking down with washes! Phew…that’s a lot for an hour and a half! Looking forward to seeing the official photos taken by the professional photographer, I’ll be sure to post them here!

Watch out for more (amateur!) photos next week as we start all over again planning our next show, Marathon 33!
