Prop making gives you wings…

The final (and very impressive!) prop for The Laramie Project…

Lai’s amazing pair of wings- I told you the show was full of magic! I think you will agree that third year design realisation student Lai has done an amazing job on these wings and on stage with the rest of the set and the smaller wings they are going to look incredible!  Stay tuned for a photo of the wings in action…

  1. Ingenious… not to mention, visually stunning!

These look great. What did she use as the base to attach the feathers to?

    • Thank you! Lai built an aluminium armature as a framework with white cotton stiffened with dress makers boning as a base. The feathers were sewn and glued on top of this in lines to form the natural shape. Glad you like them!

Oh cool, was the armature soldered together or did it have to be welded?

I was just looking at the pictures again and is that the same wings in all three? So they actually fold down as well?!

      • Yes they are the same wings! Part of the design brief was that they had to be foldable, for this reason the armature wasn’t welded together but was bolted with some ‘hinged’ sections to allow them to fold. I am pleased you are impressed with them, they were quite an impressive sight on stage! Abi
