Here it is: the start of something new…

So it’s Wednesday of Week 1, the start of a new academic year and the start of the Autumn term for all the staff and students here at the Guildhall School!

This means three things:
Firstly, we have a new group of students who have just started their Technical Theatre degrees with us. Hopefully they are as excited about starting their training as we are about having them here. In design realisation we have 7 new student, all girls, which means that we now have a full cohort with three years of design realisation students working in the department! I’ve met most of the new students in technical theatre and I THINK I can remember quite a few names- for those who know me, this is quite an achievement. They all seem a lovely bunch and I’m sure they’re talent and enthusiasm will fit right in here with the rest of our students. Welcome!

Secondly, our returning students have all moved up a year. This means our fresh faced first years are now our reliable second years and our old second years have moved into more responsible roles as third years! Lots of changes but I’m excited to see how everyone settles in to their new roles. It also means that the new third years, who joined Guildhall School the same year that I started working here, have only one academic year left before they head out into the industry. Can’t wait to see what amazing things they achieve. Many of our returning students have worked on the Olympics this summer, arguably the biggest show of our time, so I’m sure they are just chomping at the bit to get started. Good luck to all of you and have a great year!

Lastly, it means it’s time to start planning, building and painting the scenery and props for our upcoming productions this terms. We have some great shows and some incredible sets to work on this term so I’m sure the students (and the staff!) will be very busy indeed. Look out for some photos of model boxes so you can see what we are aiming for.

It’s sure to be a good one and only 11 and a half weeks to get it all done!
